Temple farm have been rearing quality lamb for the past 17 years and for all those years have reared lambs of native origin - mostly Suffolks.

These are grazed extensively on the drier parts of the levels as well as the local orchards.

Whilst Suffolks produce fine lambs with plenty of finish we are finding them less hardy and productive than other native breeds and for this reason we have introduced Jacobs to the flock.

These are being bred pure for pedigree Jacobs – some for breeding and selling and some for meat.

Jacobs are very lean which is ideal in this day and age of low fat products and have a pronounced and unmistakeable flavour. All our lambs are reared a totally natural diet of grass and their mothers milk.

We now have a small herd of Gloucester old spot pig - Reputedly the “Orchard Pig”. These are run on a traditional free-range basis and contrary to our earlier produced leaflet they will actually be ready by Oct 2005.

Beef cows at temple farm are traditionally reared and grazed between traditional apple orchards and in summer on the wetlands of the somerset levels, some of which is registered as an environmentally sensitive area.

The cows and calves are reared extensively (opposite to intensively) the calves are suckled on their mothers milk until they are 6-8 months old, we are currently moving away from milk production ceasing in Oct 2005 to increasing the suckler herd we already have and in particular the native breeds – Angus and Herefords - these have a more distinctive finer flavour which reflects the ethos of the company to produce a quality, tasty, juicy end product which has been hung properly, professionally butchered to sell direct to you through our catering business.
